Description

  • Buddha with monks
  • Gray schist
  • 12 1/2 by 20 1/2 in. (31.8 by 52.1 cm.)
The panel carved in relief with the haloed figure of the Buddha standing to the right, approached by three monks bearing a water flask, flywhisk and cushioned seat, with two others standing in the upper background. The Buddha is flanked by bodhisattvas above him on either side and a divinity emerging from a tree on the far right.

Catalogue Note

The scene depicts the Buddha's first meeting with his five former disciples at Varanasi after he attains Enlightenment, and this scene preceeds his first sermon to them.

Compare with a very similar relief panel illustrated in Kurita, 2003, vol. I, no. 268, p. 145.
