Like other artists of his generation, Kulkarni was inspired by folk and primitive art and its transmutation into the Modernist idiom. His early works are executed in a semi-abstract Cubist style depicting uniquely Indian subjects drawn from his surroundings, generally treated in a narrative format which was akin to traditional Indian painting. The rhythmic geometry created by the spare crisp lines over a flat pictorial surface is similar in manner to some of Husain's early paintings.
