The dramatic illustration depicts a pitched battle between the demon and the duo of Krishna and Pradyumna who attempt to rescue their partner Arjuna from his grip.
Catalogue Note
Low lying hills separate the image into two planes. Above we see the demon Nikumbha subduing Arjuna and then nimbly darting in between the clouds as he carries him away, all the while skillfully evading the shower of arrows released by Krishna and Pradyumna from below.
