Bhupen Khakkar's works are frequently charged with strongly erotic imagery. The artist openly acknowledged his homosexuality, still taboo in India today, in the 1980s. The common man is the subject of most of his works and the explicitly sexual tone of some of his paintings may be considered an expression of the repressed desires of the largely marginalized homosexual community in India.
