Avinash Chandra (1931-1991)

The artist and his wife Valerie visited Jamaica from late 1985 to early 1986 and references to Jamaica are present in many of his later works, as seen in this painting, with its luxuriant vegetation echoing human forms woven together with an underlying erotic thread. This work was painted at a time when, 'Avinash had come to terms with life, acknowledged and embraced its profound spiritually and was happily engaged and engulfed. For him the world wore a softer and more alluring face though he was concious it might just be an illusion he was content to dream along with it. He had matured and mellowed. These were the days of good friends, an expanse of caring and sharing, meaningful laughter and touching souls.' (Valerie Murray-Chandra, 2006).
