Catalogue Note
Glyzinienbrunnen im Pappelhain of 1900 was included in the 1903 Mediz-Pelikan show at the Hagenbund in Vienna. This work monumental work was undoubtedly influenced by Gustav Klimt’s celebrated landscapes and the Viennese Secessionists at the turn of the century. Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (1861-1908), the wife of Karl Mediz was born in Upper Austria. She studied at the university in Vienna as well as in Salzburg and Munich. Other very important presentations followed in 1905 and 1906 in the Berliner Künstlerhaus and in 1911 the Austrian exhibition in Rome. Emilie Mediz-Pelikan died all of the sudden in 1908 at the age of 47. Therefore the present work belongs only to a small number of large-scale paintings executed by the artist. This work and the following work by Karl Meditz are their interpretations of a favorite place in their garden in Corfu and togther are a beautiful dialogue between the two lovers.
