Catalogue Note
Paul Madeline depicted the French landscape in sumptuous colour and loose brushstrokes. His paintings, reverberating with heat and filled with the light of the French Mediterranean, are comparable to the work of the renowned Post-Impressionist painter Jean-Baptiste-Armand Guillaumin. Though based in Paris, Madeline painted throughout the country, from the Mediterranean all the way up to Brittany. He became a member of the Societé des Artistes Français in 1897, the same year in which he won an honourable mention. By 1910 Madeline was a full member of the Salon Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
