Catalogue Note

Jean Dufy moved to Paris in 1912 after two years military service and devoted most of his artistic career to depicting this vibrant city. Dufy would repeat various themes of Paris, centred on images of the Place de la Concorde, Montmartre, the Eiffel Tower, the Seine and, as illustrated in the present work, the Arc de Triomphe.

From an incredibly artistic family, Dufy was originally influenced by Matisse and his elder brother Raoul but his own style is characterised by exuberant colour, particularly a predominance of blue hues.  Paris, L’Arc de Triomphe is saturated with vivid green and blue pigment, uniting buildings, sky, people and the park.
