While mainstream in his easel paintings, Christian Bérard was revolutionary in his stage design work in Paris. In the present and previous lots he fuses his interests in the stage and painting, creating balances works by juxtaposing the stylized painted figures against the plain architectural structure. Marie-Blanche de Polignac, the subject of the present work, was the daughter of renowned fashion designer Jeanne Lavin and a well-known opera singer. She is set against a strong turquoise background, which offsets clear colours of the three figures flanking her, evoking Renaissance compositions of the putti, but powerful and modern in its use of colour.
