Catalogue Note

In 1879, Albert Carrier-Belleuse, then director of the Manufacture de Sèvres, invited Rodin and several other artists to design decorations for vases.  Rodin worked there until December 1882, during which time, he produced only eighteen vases.  According to Catherine Lampert in Rodin, Sculpture and Drawings, "At Sèvres he had an excuse to pursue the motifs of 'charm and grace and light and dark' that continued the tradition of Correggio and Prud'hon and Watteau, pagan idylls calling for intertwined maidens and infants, and to work his way into sexually seductive Bacchanalian themes under the guise of dreaming up cycles for the friezes of large urns' (p. 24).  After this experience at Sèvres, Rodin began the long process of creating his monumental work The Gates of Hell.
