Utrillo was one of the few painters of Montmartre subjects who was actually born there. Regarded by many artists and critics as one of the great French painters of urban scenes, he drew his inspiration from what he viewed around him. The present winter scene of the picturesque and vibrant Montmartre is unique in its unusual angle from which the windmill and the street are juxtaposed.
