Named after the symbol of Patek Philippe, the ornate Calatrava cross, this model first appeared in 1932. Charles Stern, one of the brothers who purchased the firm in that year, designed this model to revive interest in the brand during the troubled times of the Depression. The elegantly simple and classic round style proved an instant success. In 1984, Patek Philippe continued this tradition and introduced the first line of wristwatches to officially bear the name "Calatrava". Differing slightly from the original design, these watches, with their characteristic hobnail bezel, similarly became Patek's best-selling line.
