Catalogue Note

REFERENCE 4767

Reference 4767 was the first Oyster triple calendar chronograph model introduced by Rolex. Production lasted for only a short period of time as it was quickly replaced by reference 6036 popularly known as the 'Jean-Claude Killy'. The present wristwatch is especially notable for its outstanding dial with clear two-toning. The main dial section is of a silvered sheen finish, whilst the outer date ring is carried within a matt finished chapter ring. Engine turning within the subsidiary dials off-sets them clearly from the main dial surface. It should be further noted that this wristwatch bears the name of the famous South American retailer, Serpico Y Laino, who sold some of the most famous Patek Philippe and Rolex wristwatches of the 1940s and 1950s.

A similar example also with two-tone dial and retailed by Serpico Y Laino, but with champagne dial, is illustrated in: Gobbi, I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, p. 374-375. The matt finished chapter ring of the published wristwatch is extremely similar to the current lot in that both above and below it, the dial finish is a silvered sheen.
