Catalogue Note

Harriet Mellon married the twenty-five year old 9th Duke of St Albans, William Aubrey de Vere, in 1827. The one-time London actress was then in her fiftieth year, having first wed the banker Thomas Coutts in 1815. She was Coutt's sole heir at his death in 1822, when contemporary newspapers reported their silver collection as the most valuable in Britain.
