Catalogue Note

Wilson painted several versions of this composition which has been variously titled View on the Arno, View on the Tiber or Tivoli. A larger version (55 ½ by 82 in.) is in the collection of the Southampton City Art Gallery, Southampton, England. The composition must have been admired, as a copy was made by Joseph Wright of Derby in circa 1780-82 with the title Lake of Nemi, Sunset (see B. Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby, Painter of Light, London 1968, vol. II, reproduced plate 237).
