Catalogue Note
This painting repeats in composition a work by François Boucher dateable to 1747, in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
The Louvre painting was conceived by Boucher to serve two purposes. It was used as an entry piece in the Concours de 1747 as well as a tapestry design for the Beauvais manufactory. That canvas originally measured 160 by 193 cm., but was was expanded on all four sides in 1824 and restored to its original state in 1970 (for further discussion on this painting see C. Bailey, The Loves of the Gods, Fort Worth 1992, cat. no. 47). Our painting includes these additions thereby giving us a terminus post quem of 1824 for our painting.
