Catalogue Note
Alexandre-François Desportes can be grouped with Jean-Siméon Chardin and Jean-Baptiste Oudry as one of the most important still life painters in France during the 18th Century. While Chardin remained loyal to compositions made up of simple household objects, Desportes and Ourdry turned towards hunting scenes, game pieces and portraits of animals. The present composition, as well as lot 344, are examples of the different decorative still life pieces that Desportes was famous for producing. Surely these pictures would have found their way to adorn some of the most elegant homes in France.
