Catalogue Note
This picture is a version of Andrea del Sarto's painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 22.75), painted, according to Vasari, for Giovanni Borgherini. It was most probably executed in del Sarto's workshop after his death in 1530, for, as both the late Philip Pouncey and Everett Fahy have remarked, the artist used cangiante coloring popular in Florentine painting of that decade.
