Attributed to Gerard ter Borch Zwolle 1617 - 1681 Deventer

This portrait probably depicts one of the delegates who witnessed the swearing of the Oath of Ratification of the Treaty of Munster. This eventtook place at the Munster Town Hall in 1648 and it brought an end to the Eighty Years War. Ter Borch was present at Munster and painted several small scale miniature portraits on copper of the dignitaries, as well as his famous depiction of the event itself (see National Gallery, London, no. 896).
