Catalogue Note
Pieter Brueghel, the Younger produced various versions of this composition, some of which are accepted as fully from his own hand, while others are regarded as copies. The prototype, however, is thought to be a now lost work by Marten van Cleve, whose composition is known to us from a print by Balthasar van den Bos, after van Cleve.
Dr. Ertz has identified three other paintings of this subject as being fully by Pieter Brueghel, the Younger (one in a private collection Madrid, the second in the Museo Stibbert, Florence and the third sold Sotheby's, London, April 4, 1984, lot 44, see Literature below, Ertz, 2000 p. 534).
Dr. Klaus Ertz has recently seen this painting at first hand and now accepts it as a fully autograph work by Pieter Brueghel the Younger. This lot is accompanied by a photo-certificate written by Dr. Ertz, dated November 2, 2005.
