Catalogue Note

This work shows a fully rigged man-of-war with the distinctive white cliffs of Dover beyond. The work could be seen as a simple and straightforward portrayal of ships sailing in their home harbor, but Luny has cleverly displayed both his painterly skill and his maritime knowledge by depicting the same vessel in three sailing positions: starboard bow view, starboard broadside view and starboard quarter view.
