Description

  • 55.5 cm. high, 24.5 cm., 20 cm.; 1ft. 10in., 9¾in., 8in.
of baluster form, the rim surmounted by two oval profile medallions, one depicting Hercules the other with Mercury terminating in foliate and anthemion cast handles, on a trumpet foot within a leaf cast border on a square base

Gérad Hubert and Nicole Hubert, Musée national des Château de Malmaison et de Bois Préau, Paris, 1986, p. 72  and p. 74, for a pair of vases in the Bedroom of Napoleon, in orbicular diorite of similar form with a similar gilt-bronze base, (formerly  in the Château de Malmaison), one of which is reproduced here in fig.1.

The mine where this diorite orbicular is mined is situated near Olmeto in Corsica which was discovered in 1785 and was mined from the beginning of the 19th century.

A pair of vases in diorite orbicular is in the Corsican Museum  in Corte, illustrated by Jacques Dubarry de Lassale, Utilisation des marbres. Ed. Vial S.D. p 235.
