Description

  • 88cm. high, 145cm. wide, 68cm. deep; 2ft. 10½in., 4ft. 9in., 2ft. 2¾in.
of serpentine bombé form with a moulded brèche d'Alep marble top above two long drawers centred by a rocaille and foliate cast cartouche, on cabriole legs terminating in gilt-bronze scroll feet with slightly flared serpentine sides mounted with a gilt-bronze cartouche, the front and sides decorated with birds, butterflies and chrysanthemums and rockwork in tones of red, blue and green; mounts regilt, lacquer restored

Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1998, 244, illustrates a black lacquer commode of similar form with identical mounts to those upon this commode (formerly in the collection of Maurice Segoura).

Thibaut Wolvesperges, Le Meuble Français en Laque au XVIIIe siecle, 1999, Paris p. 301, fig. 166, illustrates a black lacquer commode by Mathieu Criard in vernis martin in imitation of Chinese lacquer with identical framing mounts on the drawers and central cartouche with a different apron mount.

Adrien Delorme received Master 1748. He was active until 1783, when he put his stock up for sale. Besides his speciality of lacquer and vernis martin furniture, he also specialised in marquetry of the floral variety.
