A pair of Regency mahogany and brass inlaid library armchairs circa 1815, possibly by Gillows

bidding is closed

Description

with padded back and sides and seats with loose cushions

Provenance

Originally from Wesport House, County Mayo, Ireland.

Catalogue Note

The 2nd Marquess of Sligo (1788-1845) commissioned the architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt (1775-1855) to build a large new library at Westport House, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Since the Wyatt family had close associations with the Gillow family and the name Sligo is recorded in the Gillows Estimate Sketch books there seems a strong probability that the present pair of armchairs were supplied by the same firm.  A pair of rosewood card tables likely to have been supplied by Gillows to the 2nd Marquess of Sligo are recorded in the collection at Westport House (see J. Altamont, `Westport House', Antique Collector, April 1990, p. 83, fig. 6)
