Catalogue Note

The overall form and particularly the decoration to the seatrail with the draped sunflower medallion relates to designs for 'cabriole' chairs and sofas published by A. Hepplewhite & Co. in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholster's Guide, 1788, pls. 10, 11 and 23. A group of seat furniture with similar decoration the the legs and seatrails, although from an unknown source, was sold by the late Mrs. Robert Tritton, Godmersham Park, Kent, Christie's, 6 June 1983, lot 125.
