Catalogue Note

The design of these cupboards relates to an engraving published in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer`s Drawing Book, 1792 (1972 repr., p.93, fig.43), although minus the superstructure. Sheraton describes them as suitable for  `genteel bedrooms' with the tambour door as a `preferable' addition.

For comparison, A George III bedside cupboard of almost identical form but with foliate marquetry decoration and formerly in the collection of the 1st Viscount Leverhulme sold Christie's London, 11 November 1999, lot 158.
