A George III mahogany sideboard circa 1790, attributed to Gillows

This sideboard closely relates to a design for a "Side Board Table for Mr Stuart Johnson" in Gillows'  Estimate Sketch Books dated 25 November 1786, folio 456, reel 344/93 (see illustration). The leaf-carved capitals on the legs can be found in a Gillows design for a card table dated February 1799 (folio 499, reel 344/93).

A sideboard very similar to the current lot was sold in these Rooms, 9th July 1999, lot 103.  A square-legged example is illustrated in, Ralph Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture (revised edition, 1983, vol. 3,  p.134).  A further related example is illustrated in Jourdain and Rose, English Furniture, The Georgian Period (1750-1830), 1953, p.189.
