Catalogue Note
Stirling Castle occupies a remarkable vantage point on top of an extinct volcano. It was a strategic stronghold and was a residence favoured by many of the Stuart monarchs. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned in the Chapel Royal in 1543.
In 1826 Nasmyth painted a view of Stirling from Dunmore Park for William Cribb, his frame maker and London agent. The composition and viewpoint of this picture is almost identical to the present work. Nasmyth returned to the subject several times in his career, including a composition which was exhibited at the Royal Institution, Edinburgh in 1827.
