The sitter was the daughter and heiress of John Ayshford of Wonwell Court, Devon. She married John Wise of the manor of Little Totnes, whose family had first settled in Devon in the thirteenth century. Their eldest son John was a banker who became Recorder of Totnes, and their grandson, Ayshford Wise, became M.P. for Totnes. The family moved to Clayton Hall, Staffordshire in the nineteenth century.
