Catalogue Note
The sitter was a playwright and theatre manager. He was close friends with David Garrick, and between 1763-65 he ran the Drury Lane Theatre, followed by the Covent Garden Theatre 1767-74, and finally The Haymarket Theatre, 1777-1786. As a playwright he is chiefly remembered as co-author of The Clandestine Marriage.
The present portrait derives from the prime version by Reynolds which was painted in 1767, and which was sold in these rooms on 8th April 1998, lot 101.
