Catalogue Note

The sitter was the daughter of Richard Jennings of Sandridge, Hertfordshire, and his wife, Frances Thornhurst.  She was a Maid of Honour to Anne Hyde, Duchess of York.  She married firstly, Sir George Hamilton, and secondly Richard Talbot, Duke of Tyrconnel.  She became Lady of the Bedchamber to Mary of Modena, and lived with the exiled court in France from 1690.  She travelled to Ireland circa 1709 where she lived for the rest of her life.

The present work appears to be a version of a signed work by Kneller, last recorded in a New York private collection.
