The prime version of the present portrait is not known. Sir Oliver Millar records that an important three-quarter length of the Queen wearing blue was produced in Van Dyck's studio circa 1636 (Susan J. Barnes, Nora de Poorter, Oliver Millar, and Horst Vey, Van Dyck, a Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, 2004, Appendix, under IV.A19).
