Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset, and his second wife, Mary, daughter of James Compton, 3rd Earl of Northampton. He was a loyal servant of the Hanoverian dynasty and in 1730 was appointed as Lord Lieutenant in Ireland. He was dismissed from this post owing to a number of misjudgements, but he was reappointed in 1750. In 1755 he was appointed as Master of the Horse.
The present picture derives from the portrait by Kneller which hangs at Knole.
