Description
- Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger
- Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I
- oil on panel
Three-quarter length, wearing an embroidered dress with a green cloak, and holding a fan
Catalogue Note
The present work most clearly seems to derive from the 'Ditchley' portrait of the Queen by Marcus Gheeraerts, which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. There are differences in terms of the jewel at her neck, and her costume. The fan of ostrich feathers which she holds appears to derive from a series of four portraits at Arbury, Madresfield Court, the National Maritime Museum, and at Hever Castle.
