Catalogue Note
The sitter was the daughter of John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, and his wife, Lady Evelyn Pierrepont. In 1737 she married John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford as his second wife. The artist, Johann Rudolf Studer, was a Swiss portrait painter who worked in Basel for ten years, and a further four in Paris with the famed Jacobite portraitist, Jean-Francois de Troy.
