Catalogue Note

Richmond demonstrated an early gift for drawing, and he entered the Royal Academy in 1824 aged only 15 years old, exhibiting his first academy work, Abel the Shepherd, in 1825. This self portrait probably dates from the 1840's.

During his career Richmond executed several other self-portraits both in oil and watercolour. Examples are in the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the Uffizi Gallery, Florence and the Paul Mellon Center, Yale amongst other major public collections.
