Catalogue Note

This elegant life drawing is clearly a mature work. The figure may have been drawn at the same time as William Blake Richmond’s Study for ‘Prometheus Unbound," and a sheet of vigorous black and white chalk drawings, of a figure seated in a closely similar pose (Private Collection). The younger Richmond’s painting ‘Prometheus Unbound’ was completed in 1881 (Simon Reynolds, William Blake Richmond, An Artist's Life 1842-1921, 1995, pp. 14-52). This is just one of a number of instances in which parallels can be identified between George and William Richmond’s work.
