Catalogue Note

These important drawings dating from 1775 stem from sketches made about fifteen years earlier when Grimm travelled on the dangerous mountain tracks through the Alps. Dramatic watercolours such as these would have both fascinated and alarmed the eighteenth century traveller.

The set was commissioned by James Tobin of Bristol. Each work shows the sheer scale of the landscape and Grimm wrote that they depict some of the 'remotest and most solitary part of the Alps' between Meiringen and the Grimsel, (see R.M. Clay, Samuel Grimm, 1951, p. 7).
