Catalogue Note
Morden College lies to the south of Blackheath, London. The building, which is attributed to Sir Christopher Wren was erected in 1695. In 1699 Sir John Morden, a 'Turkey Merchant', bought the estate with the aim of founding a college for 'poor Merchants who had lost their estates by accident, dangers and perils of the seas...' The building could house around forty people at any one time and is still in operation today.
