Catalogue Note
In 1774, the year of this portrait, Downman was travelling abroad. Alongside Joseph Wright of Derby, he left London in November 1773 and in February 1774 they arrived in Rome. Sparse though the records are it appears that he returned to England in the late Summer of 1775, having also visited Naples in the Autumn of 1774. Robert Dale's identity is unknown but it is most likely that the young Downman met him in either Rome or Naples
