Catalogue Note

Heysen painted Approaching Storm with Bushfire Haze from sketches made on the actual day that bushfires raged near his home in the summer of 1912. The bushfires that summer, only a few months after Heysen’s move to ‘The Cedars’ at Hahndorf, were some of the worst in living memory. This watercolour is one of a number of paintings inspired by that experience. A variant of this composition in charcoal and a large oil painting of 1913 are now in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia.
