Catalogue Note
Storrier first explored the theme of fire in the landscape in a very physical way: in his Site Project of 1981, a photodocumentation of three-dimensional steel, wire and rope constructions set ablaze in the desert outback. Through the 1980s, numerous paintings grew out of this inspiration and Storrier’s ‘burning rope’ motif became a powerful and familiar icon in contemporary Australian art. Some of these paintings were black and brooding images, the fire bolting across a dark night sky. The present image is far gentler, exuding a romantic melancholy as it speaks of life force and temporality.
