Catalogue Note

In January 1971 Williams worked extensively in gouache at four main locations: Westernport Bay, Queenscliff, Sorrento and, in the largest single group, at Walkerville near Wilson's Promontory. Situated 190 km south-east of Melbourne on Waratah Bay, this rugged stretch of coast is still only accessible by a gravel road today. When Williams was there it must have seemed little changed since early European settlement - when at least ten large vessels were shipwrecked in the area. The coastline around Walkerville is notable for its steep, stratified cliffs of limestone and greenstone, with sea caves and impressive views.

We are grateful to Mrs Lyn Williams for assistance in cataloguing this work.
