Catalogue Note

In September 1971, Fred Williams took his first trip to Queensland, to stay with Albert Tucker on a property at Springbrook. 1 He was in Queensland again in 1973. The subjects of his Queensland paintings range from panoramic views, profiles of the Glasshouse Mountains and waterfalls, to close-up rainforest studies such as this. The Springbrook rainforest gouaches are characterised by rich exotic colours - deep purples and greens - with dramatic use of black and white in details of the vegetation.

We are grateful to Mrs Lyn Williams for this additional information. Mrs Williams believes the present work is most probably no. 3 in the Bedarra Island series.
