Catalogue Note

Pucci de Rossi created this piece as a tribute to Christopher Columbus.  The work, meant to convey a traveling throne for Columbus, is emblematic of the discovery and conquest of the Americas.  Resembling a suitcase, it opens to reveal a seat, upholstered with a period Renaissance priest’s gown, referencing the church's role in the discovery of the North American continent. The copper decorating the interior of the throne symbolizes South America.  The seat can be removed to reveal a lower hidden compartment featuring text entitled “Una Strana Proposto”.
