Catalogue Note
This cast of Carpeaux's Jeune Pêcheur is unique in having a cache-sexe modelled from seaweed, rather than the normal fishing net. This may have been an addition by the founder and is beautifully cast and chased. Délesalle is not known to have made other casts of this model. It probably dates to after 1859 and before 1890. The date appearing on the bronze (1857) refers to the year Carpeaux first began working on the model during his sojourn at the Villa Medici in Rome. It was well received at the Salon as a masterful synthesis of contemporary and Renaissance influences.
