Catalogue Note

As a young graduate in 1985, Simon Costin worked with Derek Jarman on the film `The Angelic Conversion'.  Through Jarman, he was introduced to the costume designer Sandy Powell. Alexander McQueen met Costin while he was working with jewellery and was eventually persuaded to abandon his white catwalks in favour of Costin's conceptually ambitious art direction.  In addition to McQueen, Costin has attracted many leading fashion designers including Chloe, Cacharel and Roberto Cavalli.

Costin's work as a photographer is based around manipulated, and disturbing, images of himself.  He explains that he uses himself as a model as `no-one would allow me to set them on fire'.
