Description
- A Sandstone Head of Chamunda, Central India
- 32.4 cm. (12 3/4 in.)
The emaciated face bearing fangs with the crescent moon centred in her matted locks. Chamunda is the fierce manifestation of Devi variously described as the female counterpart of Shiva in his kaal bhairav form or that of Yama the god of death. Chamunda herself is one of the saptmatrikas or seven forms of shakti, the supreme Goddess. She can be identified by the crescent moon in her hair and her fierce emaciated form.
