Description

  • A Gilt Copper Seated Buddha, Tibet
  • 33.3cm. (13 1/8 in.)
The finely cast bronze depicting Shakyamuni seated in the posture of meditation with his left hand resting on his legs in dhyana mudra and his right hand displaying the bhumisparsha mudra or earth touching gesture, his robe decorated with a finely incised border is draped over his left shoulder and arranged in fan like pleats at the front.  The sculpture is clearly influenced by earlier Nepalese and Eastern Indian sculptural traditions but the overall treatment of form and proportion and the blue colouring of the hair indicate the Tibetan provenance.
