Catalogue Note
This picture appears to relate to Summer of 1880 painted whilst Melville was staying at the ancient French village of Grez-sur-Loing to the south of Fontainebleu. Melville first visited Grez in 1878 when he met Robert Louis Stevenson who was staying at the Pension Chevillon. It was probably in the riverside gardens of the Pension Chevillon, where Melville spent much of 1879 and early 1880, that Melville painted Summer and the present work.
